Your Arabic is Showing

Maya Moumne

Oct 21, 11:45 - 12:30 PM

Meridian Hall — Main Stage

Over the last 15 years, Maya’s understanding of what it means to be a designer has changed profoundly.

Somewhere between kerning and payrolls, she found herself less interested in design as a way of making things, and more interested in what those things could produce beyond themselves. This talk traces that shift, alongside the broader shifts in the design landscape across the Arabic-speaking region, from a moment when bilingual experimentation felt marginal and new to one where Arabic type is coveted, archives are cool and “decolonial” design has become an entire ecosystem and, inevitably, a market. Perhaps there’s a strange privilege in watching something you contributed to become larger than your own place within it, and in having to decide where to go next. These days, Maya is far more curious about what she can make happen, than what she can make.
