How are Pop-up Books Made? Make a Pop-up to find out!

In this workshop, graphic designer and paper engineer Kelli Anderson de-mystifies how pop-up books come together.

The workshop will include both lecture and direct, hands-on building activities. Join Kelli as she shares her design process for 3-D elements: how to build ‘blanks’, how to envision 2-D design on 3-D surfaces, how to set up a print file for a dimensional project and how to most effectively work with a printer.  Then each participant receives a laser-cut kit of paper pieces, which we’ll assemble into a “sliceform” pop-up—taken directly from Anderson’s new book, Alphabet in Motion. 

You’ll get to look at a bunch of pop-up projects, as well as:

  • A case study showing how 3-D interactive print elements can serve as explorable explanations for readers
  • A lesson in how tactile, physical metaphors can make topics more accessible
  • A glimpse into how pop-up books are designed and produced 
  • Details on how to go from 2-D to 3-D as a designer
  • Instructions for how to construct a basic sliceform structure
