Dan Falk in the The Globe and Mail called,
Edward Burtynsky, “one of Canada’s most
respected photographers.” Burtynsky presents his
awe-inspiring industrial landscapes, which are explorations
of unfamiliar places where human activity has reshaped
the surface of the land. His large-scale photographs
of sites in the US, Canada, Italy, Bangladesh, India
and China are challenging. While they depict the degradation
of nature due to quarrying, mining, railcutting, recycling,
oil refining and ship breaking, they convey a sense
of awe and beauty – provoking a new awareness
of the landscape of our time.
Burtynsky is the founder and president of Toronto Image
Works, a landmark photographic laboratory and education
facility. His work is housed in corporate and private
collections worldwide, including The National Gallery
of Canada, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The National
Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern
Art, San Francisco and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum,
New York.
